AGE GROUP

A Guide is a girl between the age of 12 and 17 years or  or studying at Grade 6 to 10.

 

THE PROMISE AND LAW

The Guide Promise and the Laws form the principles of Guiding. Every Guiding members throughout the world makes a Promise.

The Promise

“I promise on my honour to do my best, to do my duty to Allah and country, to help other people at all times and to obey the Guide/Service Guide Law”

 

The Laws

“A Guide’s honour is to be trusted,

A Guide is loyal,

A Guide’s duty is to be useful and to help others,

A Guide is a friend to all and a sister to every other Guide,

A Guide is courteous,

A Guide is a friend to animals,

A Guide is obeys orders,

A Guide sings and smiles under all difficulties,

A Guide is thrifty

A Guide is pure in thought, word and deed”.

 

THE GUIDE MOTTO

 “Be Prepared”

Lord Baden-Powell said “The Motto of the Guides on which they work is ‘Be Prepared’. That is be ready for any kind of duty that may be thrust upon them and. What s more, to  know what to do by having practices it beforehand in case of an accident or any kind of work that they may be asked to take up.”

GOOD TURNS

If you help someone without expecting a reward it is good turn.

A guide should do at least one good turn a day. This is a golden rule of guides all over the world. When you do something to help you are doing a good turn.

THE GUIDE SIGN

The Guide Sign is used when making the promise and to great other members of the Guide movement. The three fingers we point when we make the sign represents the three fold promise.

THE GUIDE SALUTE

The Guide Salute is made the same as the sign but with the hand raised up to the fore head. The Salute is used when in full official uniform as a sign of respect:

• when breaking of Colours

• at an Enrolment Ceremony

• at a presentation of awards ceremony

• when the World Flag is being carried ceremonially

• when greeting members of the Guide and Scout Movements

• when the National Anthem is being played or sung

• Should not wear any other badges that is not shown in the illustration

• Should wear black ribbon on your hair

• If your hair is long plait it neatly

• If you wear burga (head covering) it should be white in colour

• Should be worn with white shoes and white sock

• Should not wear any jewellery or makeup (except for a simple ear ring

• Sash is worn once the guide is enrolled

 

THE GUIDE COMPANY

A Guide Company should consist of not less than two Patrols, with a Captain, preferably at least one Lieutenant, and a Company Leader. If the Company should exceed thirty seven, they should register an additional Company with a correct component of Guiders.

The patrol badges used in the guide company are as follows:

1. Temple Flower Patrol (Yellow colour)

2. Jasmine Patrol (While colour)

3. Iris Patrol (Blue colour)

4. Hibiscus Patrol (Red colour)

5. Orchid Patrol (Purple colour)

6. Oleander Patrol (Pink colour)

Company Leader, Patrol Leaders and the Guiders manage the Guide Company, which forms an executive committee known as the Court of Honour (COH).

 

THE GUIDE UNIFORM

Since Guiding is a uniformed movement it is a privilege we share with guides all over the world. Girls enjoy wearing the uniform with the badges. The uniform should be worn properly and smartly. The cleanliness and neatness should be maintained with inspection during meeting.

 

The Official Uniform

The official uniform is only worn by enrolled members. So for the first time the official uniform is worn for the Guide’s enrolment ceremony. Official uniform should be worn to the first meeting of each month.  The sash is worn once the guide is enrolled.

In official uniform you

• Should not wear any other badges that is not shown in the illustration

• Should wear black ribbon on your hair

• If your hair is long plait it neatly

• If you wear burga (head covering) it should be white in colour

• Should be worn with black white and white sock

• Should not wear any jewellery or makeup (except for a simple ear ring)

 

 

Any international badge attained by the Guide could be worn on the front of the sash for thefirst six months after the event. After six months the badge should be moved to the back of the sash.

 

The Working Uniform

The working uniform for Guides consists of Guide tshirt and black trouses.

In working uniform you

• Can wear sash with badges

• Should wear black ribbon on your hair

• Should plait your hair if its long

• If you wear burga (head covering) it should be white in colour

• Should be worn with white shoes and white sock

• Should not wear any jewellery or makeup (except for a simple ear ring)

• Should not wear jeans or leggings

 

 

THE GUIDE PROGRAM

Enrolment Tests

In order be enrolled as a Guide and being awarded the Enrolment Badge, all recruits need complete the ten clauses for the Enrolment Tests. Enrolment badge is given to each Guide at your enrolment ceremony.

 

 

 

Second Class Tests

Second class tests are dived into four points. They are:

• Point 1: Personal care and Development

• Point 2: Home

• Point 3: Outdoor

• Point 4: Community

• Point 5: National and International

In order to attain the Second Class Badge, Guides need to complete all clauses from the above mentioned five points

First Class Test

Similar to Second Class, First Class tests are also divided in to the same fie points and to achieve the First Class Badge, Guides will have to complete all clauses from five points.

 

Proficiency Badges

There are a total of 70 proficiency badges and the work towards the badges begins after you are enrolled. You do not have to have to do all the badges but there are compulsory badges that go towards you getting the Second Class and First Class badge. Please check the Guide Handbook for details.

Most of these badges are aimed at developing your personal interest and hobbies as well as learn new life skills to help you reach to your full potential. These badges would also gear you towards what you want to choose as a career.

 

Chief Commissioners Award and President’s Award

 

PG Badge

All Guides who have completed the First Class may apply but must be recommended to Maldives Girl Guides Association (MGGA) by the school. The Chief Commissioner’s Award and President’s Award Application Form should be completed and sent to MGGA at least 6 months before the 17th birthday of the Guide.

President’s Award is the highest award that can be attained by Guides and will be awarded by the President of the Maldives.
